You’ve probably seen BGE lineworkers repairing outages after thunderstorms or high winds, but have you ever wondered what the rest of their work is like? In honor of National Lineworker Appreciation Day on July 10, we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at the essential work of our approximately 800 lineworkers, including overhead transmission crew leaders Charlie Hoffman and Josh Horsey.
Lineworkers are early birds! They start work at 6:00 am, and the first thing on their agenda is a safety briefing. After that, they make a plan for the day, divvy up the workload among the crew, and head to their assigned job.
From replacing aging insulators to performing urgent repairs, each job looks different. Some of our lineworkers focus on underground lines, some specialize in overhead distribution, and some work on overhead transmission lines. However, there’s one constant: our lineworkers always have lots to do! On average, our team of lineworkers tackles over 130 jobs each day – and that’s excluding storms.
A lineworkers’ day can be unpredictable. They must be ready to pivot at any moment when they receive emergency calls – even if it’s the middle of the night.

“We always have to be ready for change.” – Josh Horsey, Overhead Transmission Crew Leader
BGE lineworkers’ dedication to the cause – no matter the time – spreads good energy through central Maryland. Not only does their proactive work make outages less likely, but their rapid emergency response supports our customers even when high winds, storms, or other events compromise energy distribution.
The work that we do is important because it connects us directly to the power grid.
We’re proud to recognize Charlie Hoffman, Josh Horsey, and all BGE’s devoted lineworkers. Their commitment and expertise help communities across Maryland stay connected.

Thank you to all of our lineworkers!
