Taking Pipeline Inspections to New Heights Using Drone Technology

by Alexandra Murdock  |  January 23rd, 2026

At the Liberty Reservoir Bridge, Baltimore County and Carroll County meet, and throughout Maryland BGE is taking innovation to new heights. Using drone technology, we’re able to complete inspections of pipelines in all areas – including underneath bridges — to ensure the safety and integrity of our critical infrastructure.

Before drones, our technicians completed these visual inspections on foot and were often faced with navigating hazardous areas like busy streets, rocky water banks and even poison ivy. Now that we have drone technology, we can perform safer, more efficient and more thorough inspections.

The drones we utilize are equipped with advanced features such as obstacle avoidance systems, and six vision cameras that allow inspectors to capture hard to reach angles and identify potential issues like atmospheric corrosion or structural wear.

Using drones mitigates risk and gives teams a better view of our pipelines than they could get with just their eyes. With this technology, they can climb, descend, and maneuver with precision. All things that help us maintain reliability and ensure safety, allowing us to better support our customers.

Beyond the exciting technology, the teams working on these projects are passionate about their work.

I love what I do. Flying every day and improving BGE’s reliability and safety means a lot to me.
