Education Community

In support of virtual learning, BGE has partnered with local libraries on the Imagine Your Story summer reading programs. These programs are designed to encourage elementary-aged children to keep reading during the summer months.

For many families with elementary-aged children, the public library is the only community space available during the summer months where they can access free educational and cultural enrichment activities and programs. BGE has created an action book, activity worksheet and energy savings checklist to help educate children about how to become the next generation of super energy savers.

“While this summer might look a lot different than many families are used to, we know that children are still eager to learn. Imagine Your Story gives children a way to continue cultivating a sense of discovery. The program will strengthen reading skills and help develop positive attitudes about reading, books, and the library – all while gaining new knowledge about energy efficiency,” said Amanda Janaskie, BGE energy efficiency program manager.

Summer reading challenge materials

The Imagine Your Story theme for the 2020 summer reading challenge focuses on encouraging student participants to learn virtually through creative and expressive programs, literature, technology, arts and more.

BGE developed energy efficiency focused Imagine Your Story learning activities where kids can join Lumi℠, BGE’s virtual energy coach on a quest to save energy and stop the Energy Phantom. Coloring pages, S.T.E.M. activities, word searches, and an informative energy-saver checklist are available for parents to print at home. These materials will help children learn about how to stop the Energy Phantom, where energy comes from, and how energy gets to your home.

“Given the unusual school year that most children recently experienced, it is especially critical this summer to keep young minds active as they transition to the next grade,” said Linda Frederick, executive director of the Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library. “Our summer reading program is greatly enhanced with the support of our valued corporate partners. We are so grateful to BGE for believing in the importance of literacy and learning.”
