Building Futures: Camp NAWIC at BGE

by Jane Ballentine  |  August 22nd, 2025

In its 10th year, Camp NAWIC – Baltimore continues to inspire the next generation of women in construction. This free, week-long day camp welcomes girls from 7th to 12th grade, offering them a hands-on introduction to the world of construction trades and related fields. With the support of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and the Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Baltimore, the camp showcases the possibilities of a rewarding and financially beneficial career in the industry.

This year, BGE’s Women In Construction (WIC) employee group proudly hosted a special day for Camp NAWIC, welcoming 20 enthusiastic campers to explore the many facets of utility operations. Professionals from BGE’s operational teams led interactive stations, sharing their expertise and stories while guiding campers through real-world tasks.

The Gas Operations team taught them how to fuse gas hoses together – turning the result into a colorful hula hoop. And under the guidance of the Electric team, campers suited up with gloves and safety gear to remove and install an elbow inside a pad mount, experiencing the precision and care required in electrical work. At the Environmental station, campers planted seed balls in cups, learning about sustainability and land stewardship. Campers also took an environmental tour of Spring Gardens and watched the Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) drone team in action!

Throughout the day, the campers not only gained technical skills but also saw firsthand the strength, intelligence, and leadership of women thriving in construction careers. With mentorship from BGE’s WIC group and encouragement from seasoned professionals, these young women left with a deeper understanding of the industry—and a spark of inspiration for their future.

Camp NAWIC is more than a camp. It’s a launchpad for dreams and a celebration of possibility.
