Reliability

Ahead of the Curve: Reliability Starts with Proactive Care

It’s early morning in Columbia, Maryland and the crew is already hard at work. Today’s mission? Replacing a single-phase pad-mounted transformer that’s been powering 22 homes for nearly half a century.

This isn’t just routine maintenance, it’s part of BGE’s ongoing commitment to reliability and safety. We proactively inspect pad-mounted equipment to catch potential issues before they become problems. The transformer being replaced has served its time, and to ensure we continue to deliver reliable service to our customers at a time when electric demand is ever-growing, we’re thinking ahead. That’s what proactive work looks like.

We’re not just swapping out old equipment, we’re making sure our customers have power they can count on. That means fewer outages, safer systems, and peace of mind for families who rely on us every day.

BGE’s Equipment Diagnostic and Repair Unit (EDRU) is out in the field daily, inspecting, diagnosing, and replacing equipment across our entire service area. Some weeks we replace a few transformers; other weeks it’s two a day. It’s steady work, and it matters.

We always look ahead to make sure we’re being proactive in our work. Making sure we have equipment on the system that is safe for our customers and our employees.

What we do has a real impact. Whether it’s keeping someone’s home warm in the winter or making sure their medical equipment runs without interruption, our work touches lives. Along with the safety of our customers—it’s about our coworkers too. Safe, reliable equipment means safer conditions for everyone who works on the system.

We take pride in staying ahead of the curve. Because when we do our job right, most people never even notice. And that’s exactly how it should be.
