Imagine trying to find a single broken bulb in a string of holiday lights. You’d have to check each one, hoping to spot the problem. That’s how finding the cause of an outage used to work—until fault sensor technology changed the game.
Over the past few years, BGE has been leading the way in deploying fault sensors, which are smart devices that help us locate outages faster and more accurately. These sensors are installed inside pad-mounted switches (those green boxes you may see in your neighborhood) and on overhead power lines. They act like a built-in alert system, instantly signaling where a fault has occurred.
Before fault sensors, our field crews had to patrol the lines manually, searching for the issue like detectives following a trail. Now, thanks to these devices, we can pinpoint the problem from our operations center and send crews directly to the source—no guesswork, no delay.
This technology has already saved tens of thousands of hours in outages. And as we continue to expand the use of fault sensors, the benefits will only grow.
Most customers won’t see these sensors—but they’ll feel the difference. Every time the lights come back on quickly, or don’t go out at all, it’s a quiet win for smart technology and proactive planning.
